About the team

Founded in 1952 by Brian Moston & Roy Carter.

Track was at Brookside Road, Gatley, Cheadle, Cheshire.

Track Dimensions: 95yards x 16.5ft,  Grade 1.

Later Dimensions(1978): 91yards x 16.5ft, red shale surface.

The track itself was built and maintained by Brian Moston, and was claimed to be one of the best in the country.

Raced in the Manchester, Stockport & District League.

2nd Team raced in the Northern Premier League Div 2.

A & B Teams raced in the Manchester League Div 1.

Raced in the Manchester Winter Satellite League(South) 1963/64.

Raced in the Manchester, Stockport & District Junior League(1965).

Race jackets depicted a rider on horseback, this being based on the Ariel Motorcycle badge, with the horses head in place of the letter "A".

Another set was red & white Arsenal type shirts with the black Hunters horseshoe race jacket on top, Black trousers and socks.

The site of the old track now has a house built on it, this about 1995, and the council tip next door is now a park.

1952 Brian Moston was Manchester, Stockport and District Individual Champion.

1952 Brian Moston won the Norfolk Grand Prix.

1953 Brian Moston came runner-up in the Norfolk Grand Prix.

1953 Brian Moston came runner-up in the Manchester, Stockport and District Championship.

1953 Brian Moston came 3rd in the Manchester Grand Prix.

1953 & 1954 Brian Moston came runner-up in the Lancashire County Individual Championship.

1954 Brian Moston was Manchester, Stockport and District Individual Champion.

1954 Brian Moston came runner-up in the Edinburgh Open after a run-off with the eventual winner Ian Frazer.

1954 & 1955 Brian Moston won the Manchester Grand Prix.

1955 Brian Moston was Lancashire County Champion.

1955 Brian Moston came runner up in National Individual Final.

1955 Brian Moston came runner-up in the Edinburgh Open.

1956 Brian Moston was Lancashire County Champion.

1956 & 1957 Brian Moston came runner-up in the Manchester Grand Prix.

1957 Brian Moston was Cheshire County Champion.

1957 Brian Moston came runner-up in the Manchester, Stockport and District Championship.

1958 Brian Moston was Cheshire County Champion.

1958 Brian Moston(14) won the Manchester Senior Individual Championship, with Vinny Marsland(12) of Longsight runner up. Vic Hinchcliffe(10) of Wilmslow won a three way run-off to come 3rd, with Davenport(Wilmslow) and Nanfan(Belle Vue).

1958 & 1959 Brian Moston won the Manchester Grand Prix.

1959 Brian Moston(12) won British Individual Championship at War Memorial Ground, Hungerford, runner up John Varnish(11) Hagley, 3rd Pete Fraser(11) East Ham.

1959 Brian Moston(14) won the Cheshire Individual Championship after a run-off with Derek Garnett.

1959 Brian Moston came runner-up in the Manchester, Stockport and District Championship.

1960 Brian Moston was runner-up in the World Individual Championship after a run-off with Fred Boutell.

1960 Brian Moston won the Manchester Grand Prix.

1961 Brian Moston won the Manchester Grand Prix for the 4th time with a 15 point maximum. Runner up was Vic Hinchliffe(14) who was unlucky to be involved with a tangle of bikes whilst leading Moston. Third was Derek Garnett on 12 points.

1961 both the Cheshire Individual Final and the Northern Individual Final placings were identical to the Manchester Grand Prix.

1962 Brian Moston(14) won the Cheshire Individual after a run-off with Derek Garnett, 3rd was Pete Lomas(13) of Wilmslow.

1962 Brian Moston(15) won the Manchester Grand Prix, runner up Derek Garnett(14), 3rd Vic Hinchcliffe(13).

1962 Brian Moston(12) won the Berkshire Grand Prix. Four riders were level on 10 points, requiring a run-off for the other top places. the order of finishing was John Mills, Moss Bevan, Johnny Watling(Derek Garnett was excluded for running with his bike).

1982 Martin Zuk wins the NEPS Express Trophy, runner-up Dave Lunn, 3rd Dave Mountain(both Heckmondwike).

Team Honours.

1954 National Senior Team Champions, beating Foulston Eagles(Devon) 54 - 40 at Hayes, Middlesex.

1954 won the Lancashire County Team Championship.

1955 National Senior Team Champions, beating Tolworth Tudors(Surrey) 53 - 43 at Fleet, Hants.

1957 National Senior Team Champions, beating Raynes Park Tigers (Surrey) 49 - 47 at Weston, Middlesex.

1963/64 won the Manchester Winter Satellite League(South). Rode 27 - Won 22 - Drew 1 - Lost 4. Runners up Ashton Aces, 3rd Burnage Flyers.

1973 National Junior Team Champions, beating Woodside Diamonds (Yorks) 44 - 34 at Parkwood, Yorks.

1979 - 1981 League champions plus Knock-Out Cup Winners.

The 1965 British Senior Individual Final was held at Brookside Road, Gatley, Cheadle, Cheshire. The Referee was Jimmy Cobain(Strathclyde). The winner was Derek Garnett(Offerton-Cheshire) with a 15 point maximum, runner-up was John Watling(Gorton-Manchester) with 12 points, 3rd was Clive Hurrell(Hellesdon-Norfolk) on 11 points. The winner was Vic Haines(Hackney-East London) with 13 points, runner-up was Chris Taylor(Gorton-Manchester) on 12 points, 3rd was John Harrison(Whoberley-Warks) with 10 points. The 1969 British Senior Team Final was held at Brookside Road. This was between Leicester Monarchs and Offerton Devils, who ran out the evetual winners. Referee was Jimmy Cobain.

The 1969 British Junior(under 17) Team Final took place at Brookside Road, this being between Woodside and Offerton, who were the winners. Referee was Dave Blinston.

Woodside Diamonds 21: Ian Lister 7; Gordon Helliwell 5; Dave Cook 4; Pip Serbert 2; Lee Booth 2; Gerald Cowan 1.
