Cycle Speedway Teams Down the Ages

Midlands West: Adderley Park Pirates

About the team

A group of teenage boys in the Small Heath district of Birmingham formed a cycle speedway club. They marked and cut out a rough track on waste ground behind the Kingston Cinema and held scratch meetings during the Summer months. Picturegoers often stopped to watch and one day they completely blocked the pavement, so the police moved the boys on. Their enthusiasm was undeterred as they went in search of an aternative site, passing St Andrew's(home of the Birmingham City Footbal Club) before reaching a derelict recreation ground where they rediscovered an old cinder circuit which had belonged to the 1949 vintage 'Green Aces'. Only a little spadework was required to bring the track up to present day standards, and it was from this base that they operated as the Adderley Park Pirates in 1958.

Team raced as the nursery side to the Birmingham Lions.
