Cycle Speedway Teams Down the Ages
Yorkshire South: Tinsley Diamonds
About the team
The track was situated in the Tinsley/Blackburn area under the shadows of the once famous cooling towers alongside the M1 motorway, on the border of Sheffield & Rotherham.
This infamous club was run by Steve Perkinton, and their reputation went before them in the literal sense too!!
The reason? They were probably the only cycle speedway club to have a track built on a sewerage settling bed!!
A number of riders literally fell foul of the surface, with Ian Hole, who fell severall times during a midweek Sheffield League match, having to hitch a lift back home semi-stripped on the back of a drop side lorry.
The club operated for around two years at the end of the 1970 season, before Perkinton's efforts were to no avail, and he joined the Parkwood club after Tinsley folded.
