Cycle Speedway Teams Down the Ages

Staffordshire: Shelton Tigers

About the team

1st track was in the middle of what is now Smallwood Playing Fields.

2nd track was in Clough Street, Hanley.

3rd track, which was built by the council, was in Compton Street, Shelton. This was opened on the 15th October 1967 with a challenge match against Offerton Devils, which the Tigers lost 50-45.

All three tracks were within 200yds of each other.

Raced from 1961 - 1969(disbanded on Aug 10th this year due to lack of riders).

In 1973 changed name to the Stoke Potters(Speedway team had that name).

Team colours were Black & Yellow stripes, with the head of a tiger being added in 1966, over black & yellow striped shirts.

Club Secretary/Manager: Brian Massey, 23 Warwick Street, Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent(throughout the 60s).

Individual Honours.

1965 Doug Davis won the Potteries Championship at White Rock, runner-up Dave McCue, 3rd Henry Jones.
