Cycle Speedway Teams Down the Ages

Suffolk: Saxmundham Wasps

About the team

1970s team that raced friendlies in Suffolk.

Their first match was against Leiston Aces in 1973 for an "Exhibition Match" at an Anglo American Youth Festival at Saxmundham Middle School, this being organised by the Youth Club.

The Festival was officially opened by Clement Freud, who only three days earlier had been elected Liberal M.P for Eye(Suffolk). As he rose off his chair to make the opening speech, the chair slipped into the gap bewtween the stage and the tennis court fence, and he managed to pull the Carnival Queen and her attendants off the stage with him. The headlines in the paper next day read "M.P's first downfall".

Their track was on grass, marked out with a chalk line, the outer having a ring of straw bales as crash barriers.

Team Manager: Adrian Gregory.
