About the team

Club formed in 1946, regarded by many as a pioneer club.

Track was in Ellesmere Street, Poplar E4.

Club Secretary: Mrs C.R. Monk, 21 Tooke Street, Millwall E14.

Moved to the rear of the Black Lion in Chrisp Street, Plaistow in 1947, and eventually became the Black Lion Monarchs.

Raced in the East London District League Div 1(1947-1951).

Individual Honours.

1948 Bert Hudson won the East London Riders championship, runner-up Ken Randall.

Team Honours.

Were the first winners of the East London District League Div 1 in 1947.

Won the East London District League Div 1 again in 1948, runners-up Forest Gate Tigers.

Other trophies won included the "Stratford Express" cup, plus the "East London" trophy.

Speedway Riders.

Colin Clarke rode for Oxford.

Pat Clarke rode for Oxford and West Ham.

Dave Still rode for Eastbourne and Oxford.

Jim Chalkley rode for Southampton, West Ham and New Cross as a Junior, and Rye House and Wolverhampton as a team rider.
