At the Grand Opening of the new track, Brian Melville had a bad accident, being knocked out in the process, and badly gashing his arm, eventually waking up at his Team Managers house. As captain of the team, he was due to be presented with the cup by PC49, a big radio star of the time, but due to his mishap missed out on the occasion. One of Brian's main claims to fame was being selected to ride at New Cross Speedway track, giving a demonstration of Cycle Speedway during a meeting.
Ron Swaine rode for Swindon and Exeter.
