Essex: Thurrock Racers

About the team

1st track at Charrington Fields, St Chads Road, Tilbury, Essex untill 1967. The final match took place on Sunday 29th October between the present team(Thurrock Racers) and the past team(Thurrock Stars), the present team winning 68-40.

King George V Playing Fields, Blackshots Lane, Grays from 1968. Track was officially opened by Councillor Ray Bolger and Mr Doug Smith(Chairman of the Thurrock Sports Council). A match was staged between Thurrock and Hawbush, which the home side won 62-45. The track itself cost £1000 to build.

Track Dimensions: 85yards x 18ft, "Hartco" shale surface.

Club Colours: Red, Gold & Blue(1965).

Club Colours: Mauve shirts with White/Yellow/Red markings on side.

Individual Honours.

1973(27th May) Dave Tulloch(14) won the Southend Grand Prix(Southend Standard Cup), runner-up after a run-off was Val Hockley(Estuary), 3rd Kim Waddup(Headley), both riders scoring 13 points. The Trophies were presented by Mr Terry Waterman, Southend Standard's Sports Editor.

1976 John Colbert came runner up in National Individual Final.

1978 John Colbert(19) won the Poole Laurels, runner-up was Colin Wheeler(16), 3rd Ian Woodhouse(15).

1978 Ian Gill won the Mick Webb Cup at Great Wakering, runner-up Paul Cordery, 3rd Chris Payne(both Estuary Eagles).

1980 Pete Stevens won the Southern Counties Senior Individual Championship after a run-off with Chris Strutt(Basildon), both riders scoring 16 points, 3rd was Tony Ridgewell(15 points).

1980 Pete Stevens(18) won the Epping Grand Prix, runner up was Alan Cox(Bow) after a run-off with his team mate John Smith, both riders scoring 15 points. 

1982 Ian Gill(18) won British Under 21 Individual at King George V Playing Field, Grays, Essex, runner up Calvin Stephens(17)  Wolverhampton, 3rd Andy Barnes(16) Poole.

1986 Dennis Hubble(16) won British Individual Championship at St Thomas's Rec, Stockport, runner up Tim Snook(16) Ipswich, 3rd Jim Varnish(16) Birmingham.

1992 Scott Nelder(19) won British Under 21 Individual at King George V Playing Field, Grays, Essex, runner up Andrew Jackson(19) Tameside, 3rd Darren Reeks(18) Exeter.

1993 Scott Nelder(20) won the British Under 18 Individual at Leicester, runner up Darren Gumbley(Birmingham), 3rd Craig Marchant(Leicester).

Team Honours.

1980 won the Southern Counties League Knock Out Cup Final, beating Basildon Comets 104 - 71 points at the Edmonton track.

Dave Wilson was unfortunately excluded in the run-off for moving at the gate after having been put under starters orders. 3rd was Alan Brown(Hayes-Middlesex) after a run-off with Paul Hulme(Denton-Manchester), both riders scoring 17 points. Runner-up was Calvin Stevens(Hillcrest-West Midlands) on 19 points, 3rd was Dean French(Woodlands-Warks) with 18 points.
